Gift Hampers, The History of Hampers
Gift Hampers, The History of Hampers
When in doubt regarding what type of gift to give a loved one or someone that you don't know very well, gift hampers can be a perfect solution. These can be filled with items that are as personal or generic as you wish, in order to suit all gift giving needs. The term hamper is a British word that was originally used to describe a wicker basket used to transport gifts, laundry, or food. This is similar to any type of basket, and today is used to describe the container used to house gifts.
Food hampers are another variety of the typical gift hampers that you might see available for the holidays. This is the most traditional sense of the word. These are usually filled by charities, and contain food, clothes, and toiletries to help the needy. Up until the middle of the last century, hampers were limited in size so that they could be physically carried and given to someone. They would usually only have items for one or two weeks, and then the recipient could use the hamper to carry their own household items in after they had used the contents.
Today's gift hampers are no longer associated with charity, however. Today, they can be quite lavish, containing top of the line cheese, wine, champagne, chocolates, and fruit. There is no end to how personal you can make these hampers, if you are assembling them yourself. On the other hand, they can make perfect corporate gifts if you are more interested in purchasing a pre packaged hamper from a professional business that stuffs them for the holidays and other occasions. Some examples of occasions that they are used on include Mother's day, birthdays, for baby gifts, and Valentine's Day.
To get started with figuring out if gift hampers will be the right gift for your guests or other needs, it's a good idea to take a look and see what is currently out there for sale. If you don't have much time, these gift boxes or baskets can be rushed out to recipients overnight. Within the business world, these are particularly popular, because they can be used to send to a department within a company that has been doing well, as well as given as a goodwill gesture to visiting clients. They can also be personalized to give to loved ones or family members, with the addition of a special card or other internal message.
